Every individual involved in the education of a child, whether that person
is a parent, teacher, consultant, researcher, or any of the special related
service personnel have at one time or another desperately attempted to find
and utilize appropriate ways to rapidly and easily identify the mental age
of a child that we are currently working with. One of the easiest and
fastest ways of locating a mental age based upon current skill levels is
the LAP.
|
|
The LAP provides assessment information from birth to 72 months of age in
the areas of
gross motor,
fine motor,
pre-writing,
cognitive,
language,
self-help, and
personal/social.
The LAP helps to keep me focused and to keep a better perspective when
writing an IEP. It also is extremely helpful when a regular education
teacher comes and informs you that a particular student is functioning
on a lower level than the rest of his/her class; the LAP is an easy way
to inform the teacher of where that student is mentally which usually
leads to that student receiving much needed help. A student may indeed
be ten years old BUT, if by using the LAP, you are able to show a teacher
where the child is actually functioning, you are better able to explain
why the child is doing what they are doing.
|
|
Not only do persons who deal with an exceptional population find the LAP an
invaluable tool, it provides a much simpler explanation to others of where
a child may be functioning. After I have spent hours assessing, writing, and
re-writing IEP goals for a student, I often find that I may have still missed
the mark and the LAP helps me to better stay on track and to facilitate
growth for our students.

|
Good luck on using the LAP. I hope that you find it to be as easy to use and
as useful as I have.
